The rural parish of Myerscough & Bilsborrow (being a 2003 amalgamation of the formerly separate Bilsborrow and Myerscough parishes) lies in the north west of Lancashire, in between the city of Lancaster to the north, the Forest of Bowland to the east, the city of Preston to the south and Blackpool to the west. It comprises the historic townships of Myerscough and Bilsborrow, Brock and the western fringe of Barton Village. The Duchy of Lancaster has had important land holdings in Myerscough since 1267.

The parish has an adult population of 1354 and covers an area of 1440 hectares. There are seventeen farms - thirteen are dairy farms, eight are part of the Duchy's Myerscough Estate.

Bilsborrow Village was County Champion in 1994, 1998 and 2000 in Lancashire's Best Kept Village Competition. Barton, Bilsborrow & Myerscough War Memorial (2002), Bilsborrow Church (1992-1995), Guy's Cricket Ground (2005), Memorial Gardens (2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005), Olde Duncombe House (1993, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008) and Sunnyside Caravan Park (1994 and 2000) have all been Champion in their respective classes.

The Myerscough & Bilsborrow stretch of the Lancaster Canal extends from Green Man Bridge in the north to Hankinson House in the south. It is a County Biological Heritage Site. A canal boat may be chartered by arrangement at Olde Duncombe House, by Bilsborrow Wharf.

The River Brock runs through the parish between Ned Croft Wood in the east and Nearer Light Ash in the west.

The parish is administered by a council comprising of nine members. The clerkship is provided by Mr Roy W L Bassnett JP. The electorate is represented in Parliament by Ben Wallace MP, at County Hall by County Councillor Mrs Valerie Wilson and at Wyre Civic Centre by Borough Councillor Peter Murphy.

There are Anglican and Catholic Churches in Barton, together with an Anglican Church in Bilsborrow . Bilsborrow Church was provided by the late Miss Sarah Jane Salisbury of Myerscough Hall.

Myerscough College has a major presence in the parish and is of national standing. The campus is excellently resourced and the College Estate extends to 605 hectares. It offers both further and higher education. The University of Central Lancashire validates its degrees and there are special links with two universities in the USA. The campus has extensive residential accommodation.

 

There are Church of England and Catholic Primary Schools in Barton and a Church of England Primary School in Bilsborrow. The latter, founded in 1718, was endowed by the late John Cross of Myerscough. There is nursery provision in Barton, Bilsborrow and at Myerscough College.


Guy's Thatched Hamlet is a high quality attraction comprising Owd Nell's Tavern, Guy's Eating Establishment, Tommy Hatton's, Guy's Lodgings, Guy's Cricket Ground and Guy's Bowling Green. It is under the personal supervision of the owners, Roy, Shaun & Kirk Wilkinson.

The Roebuck Hotel complex includes a 40-bedroom lodge inn - Premier Inn .

James Edwards Brock has a major Land Rover franchise in the parish, serving an area from Lancaster in the north, Forest of Bowland in the east, Chorley in the south and Blackpool in the west.

Barton Grange Garden Centre is located at a 52 acre site in the parish at Brock. The Director in charge is Mr Guy Topping..

Myerscough & Bilsborrow can boast some of the best facilities for sport and leisure in the county, at the College, Guy's Thatched Hamlet, Northern Microlight School, Roebuck Hotel and on the Lancaster Canal. There is an excellent Caravan Club Certificated Location at Olde Duncombe House, by Bilsborrow Wharf.
